Contender announces new PEN laminate range

Contender Sailcloth is proud to announce their latest innovation in sailcloth design. Contender will soon introduce a full range of PEN fiber laminates based on a new "superimposed" scrim construction (see picture below) featuring primary and secondary warps. This exclusive formation eliminates crimp in the fill as well as the warp by placing all the fill yarns on top of the primary or structural warp ends. The filling is held in place with the upper or secondary warp consisting or very fine denier polyester. This construction using PEN fibers is identified with a blue tracer yarn spaced at even increments across the width of the scrim as illustrated below.

Another advantage to this superimposed construction is the ability to increase the fill count along with the warp density without impacting the low load warp performance. By keeping the fill and warp fibers in separate planes, they tend to displace each other very little at intersection points for a "0-0 crimp" construction. As a result, superimposed constructions can support more filling pics for better balance, tear resistance, and laminate durability.

Contender has tested the PEN laminates on the water in both Europe and Australia with very successful results. Low stretch performance and excellent durability have been observed in both mainsails and genoas used during the past racing season.
